Whenever we have visitors over we want them to feel as comfortable as possible. This client from Houston was no different. A couple of relatives would be staying over for a few days, and he was getting his house ready to welcome them. While cleaning and clearing the guestroom, he realized that the shower was looking dirty and moldy and that it needed to be thoroughly cleaned. What's more, he noticed the grout around the angle joints looked weird, so he decided to look for a solution online. After watching a couple of DIY videos, he realized it was quite a hefty job, so he decided to search for caulking services in Houston instead. That's when he found Sir Grout Houston.

After reading some of the testimonials on our website, he decided to fill out the contact form to request a free, in-home evaluation and quote. He quickly got a follow-up call from one of Sir Grout Houston's representatives to set a convenient day and time for the evaluation. The client took the next available slot so that the technicians could come and check out the problem.

What the Caulking Specialists Had to Say

On the day of the evaluation, the technicians inspected the shower enclosure and concluded that a tile and grout cleaning was necessary to restore its appearance. They also noticed that the grout needed to be repaired in some areas, and all the right-angle joints needed to be recaulked.

They told the client everything that they would need to do to fix the problem and offered him an estimate. He agreed to the price, and they scheduled another appointment to get started.

The Day the Shower Was Restored

When the technicians arrived on the day of the appointment, the first thing they did was remove the shower door to give them easy access to the enclosure. Next, they masked and protected all the surfaces that were adjacent to the work area to avoid damaging them.

Then, they applied a special tile and grout cleaner on the floor and walls, let the surfaces soak for a few minutes, and then used a gentle scrubber to completely remove the soap scum and grime.

After that, the specialists used a steam cleaner to ensure they got rid of all the mold and mildew.

Once the shower was thoroughly cleaned and completely dry, the technicians repaired the grout and removed the old caulk.

Then, they proceeded to color seal the grout to give it an even color. On all the right-angle expansion joints, the old caulk was replaced with epoxy grout.

Our epoxy grout is non-porous, mold-resistant, and will not crack or peel.

Once the technicians finished color sealing and recaulking, we buffed on Tile Armor, a clear sealer that protects tiles and grout against stains and mold and mildew buildup.

The Results of Our Work

When the client saw the shower, he was pleased with the result and was happy that he decided to hire us instead of turning it into a DIY project. Even though he found many websites and videos that explained how easy it supposedly is to recaulk and repair grout, he could clearly see that it wasn't so simple.

He accompanied the crew every step of the way and realized he could have never done it in time for his relatives' arrival if he had decided to do it himself. What's more, he did not want to risk making a mistake that could cause a water leak that might lead to structural damage in the long run.

The color seal/Caulk he chose, Bath White, went perfectly with the pink tiles of the guest bathroom's shower enclosure.

Some Care and Maintenance Tips

As they usually do, our team offered the client some tips on how to properly care for the shower so that it keeps its spotless appearance. Here's a list of recommendations on how to routinely clean tile surfaces.
  • Vacuum your floor frequently to remove loose dirt and dust.
  • Apply a pH-neutral, soap-free floor cleaner to your shower and let soak for 5 minutes. Then clean as usual.
  • Always dry with a towel or terry cloth to remove dirty water/cleaner residue that settles into the grout lines. Otherwise, once the liquid residue evaporates, dirt will be left behind.
  • Make sure your shower stall is properly ventilated. Stagnant water breeds stain-causing mildew as well as other fungi.
  • Try not to use soap-based cleaners on tiles. They leave behind a film, dull the surface, and promote mildew.
  • Never use acid- or ammonia-based cleaners, as they can change the grout's color, break the sealer, and erode the grout.

Why is Caulking Showers, Bathtubs, and Backsplashes Important?

Caulking is necessary around all movement joints. A movement joint is an area of the shower, tub, or backsplash that should made with flexible materials so that the two joining structures don't become damaged when the space between them shifts, expands, or contracts. These can cause the grout to crack. The Tile Council of America standards call for caulking these areas.
